MUSIC CREATORS JOIN FORCES WITH ASCAP AND AMERICA SCORES TO TEACH KIDS THE ART AND CRAFT OF SONGWRITING, FILMMAKING AND FILM SCORING
ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES Visits Schools
in Atlanta, Los Angeles and St. Louis
New York, NY, October 23, 2009: ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) and America SCORES have teamed up for a fourth year to present its national songwriting mentorship program, ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES. The program was established in 2006 to create a collaboration between songwriters and students utilizing songwriting and music as another engaging and inspiring way for kids to express themselves. This year's program will feature a diverse group of music creators and an animation filmmaker who will visit schools in three cities across the country: Atlanta, Los Angeles and St. Louis.
As part of the program, ASCAP selects its talented members from a variety of musical genres to teach songwriting workshops during America SCORES after-school poetry classes. By the end of three sessions, the ASCAP member will have co-written and recorded a song with the SCORES kids. The kids also learn about the importance of labeling their own creative work with the copyright symbol, year and their name just as they would see on any published, professional creative work. The ASCAP Foundation, a public charity dedicated to supporting music education and talent development programs, funds the program.
To further support this unique program, ASCAP produces a special compilation CD of the songs created, which is distributed to each of the schools involved, as well as to music industry decision makers.
The details for this year's program are:
St. Louis, MO:
Who: Grammy Award-winning producer Alonzo "Zo" Lee, Jr.
When: October 26 & 28 and November 2, 2009

When: October 26 & 28 and November 2, 2009
Where: Palms Middle School, 10860 Woodbine St., Los Angeles, CA 90034
As an interesting departure from the regular ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES program, animation filmmaker Roger Blonder and composer Shawn Clement will work with a group of 20 students, ages 11-13, from Palms Middle School to create a short experimental film based on their own original poem. The students will work with the educators from America SCORES to write a group poem which captures the essence of their personal life experience. Blonder will then work with the students to envision, animate and record the digital imagery that will be assembled into a poetry-based experimental film. Clement will work with the team to develop sound designs and will create three different film scores for the film to illustrate to the kids how different music brings out the different emotions of the final film.

DAVID NEWMAN on-board "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel"
According to GSA, David Newman is responsible for the musical accompaniment of the 2nd installment in the Alvin and the Chipmunks saga, laughably entitled Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel is an upcoming 2009 American live-action/CGI and sequel to the 2007 film starring Jason Lee, David Cross, Cameron Richardson, Zachary Levi and the voices of Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Anna Faris, Christina Applegate and Amy Poehler.
The film features Alvin and the Chipmunks and their female counterparts, The Chipettes. It will be directed by Betty Thomas and distributed by 20th Century Fox, and produced by Regency Enterprises and Bagdasarian Productions. It was originally scheduled to be premiered on March 19, 2010, but it was moved up to a Christmas 2009 release instead. This film is rated PG for mild rude humor.
The movie will also feature performances by the winners of the third season of America's Best Dance Crew, Quest Crew. David Seville (Jason Lee) sends Alvin (Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler), and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) off to school, saying that it is "good for them". Little does he know, the Chipmunks feel like "Chipmunks Out of Water" on account of all the human students around. Meanwhile, Ian Hawke (David Cross) (after the loss of the Chipmunks dealt him a serious blow) searches the world for animals who can sing and dance. He happens upon Brittany (Anna Faris), Jeanette (Christina Applegate), and Eleanor (Amy Poehler), the Chipettes, and cannot wait to make them famous, and get his sworn revenge on the Chipmunks.[
ALEX WURMAN scoring "Extraordinary Measures"
According to the GSA, Alex Wurman is working on a new assignment, entitled Extraordinary Measures. Extraordinary Measures is a 2010 film starring Brendan Fraser, Harrison Ford, and Keri Russell. It is distributed by CBS Films and is scheduled for release on January 22, 2010.
Brendan Fraser, Harrison Ford and Keri Russell star in Extraordinary Measures for CBS Films, the film division within CBS Corporation. The project, which wrapped principal photography in mid-June 2009, was the first film to go into production for CBS Films. Ford is also executive producer on the project. Tom Vaughan (Starter for 10, What Happens in Vegas) is directing.
Extraordinary Measures is based on the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family's future to pursue a cure for his children's life threatening disease. From his working class roots, John Crowley (Brendan Fraser) has finally begun to taste success in corporate America. Supported by his beautiful wife Aileen (Keri Russell) and their three children, John is on the fast track. But just as his career is taking off, Crowley walks away from it all when his two youngest children, Megan and Patrick, are diagnosed with a fatal disease. With Aileen by his side, harnessing all of his skill and determination, Crowley teams up with a brilliant, but unappreciated and unconventional scientist, Dr. Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford).
Filming in May 2009 at Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland, Oregon
Together they form a bio-tech company focused on developing a life-saving drug. One driven to prove himself and his theories, the other by a chance to save his children, this unlikely alliance eventually develops into mutual respect as they battle the medical and business establishments in a fight against the system – and time. But, at the last minute, when it appears that a solution has been found, the relationship between the two men faces a final test - the outcome of which will affect the fate of John's children.
Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher ("World Trade Center," "Erin Brockovich"), alongside Carla Santos Shamberg ("Erin Brockovich"), produce through their Double Feature Films banner. Robert Nelson Jacobs ("The Water Horse," "Chocolat") wrote the screenplay, which was inspired by the book "The Cure" by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Geeta Anand.
MARCELO ZARVOS scores "Beastly"
According to the Gorfaine Schwartz Agency composer Marcelo Zarvos is assigned to score Beastly.
Beastly is an upcoming 2010 fantasy romance feature film, based on Alex Flinn's 2007 novel of the same name. Written and directed by Daniel Barnz, the film stars Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer, Mary Kate Olsen, Neil Patrick Harris and Lisa Gay Hamilton.
The plot focuses on Kyle Kingson, a handsome man with an evil streak, who ditches a classmate who is a witch in disguise during an environmental bash. The witch, then, casts a spell on Kyle and physically transforms him into a grotesque monster. However, in order to reverse the spell, he needs to be kissed by someone whom he loves sincerely, and likewise to that person. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name which is also a homage to the original story of Beauty and the Beast. However, the film and the novel both take place in the modern times, set in New York City (although filmed in Montreal).
Kyle Kingson (Alex Pettyfer) has it all – looks, intelligence, wealth and opportunity – and a wicked cruel streak. Prone to mocking and humiliating “aggressively unattractive” classmates, he zeroes in on Goth classmate Kendra Hilferty (Mary Kate Olsen), inviting her to the school’s extravagant environmental bash. Kendra accepts, and, true to form, Kyle blows her off in a particularly savage fashion. She retaliates by casting a spell that physically transforms him into everything he despises. Enraged by his horrible and unrecognizable appearance he confronts Kendra and learns that the only solution to the curse is to find someone that will love him as he is – a task he considers impossible. Repulsed by his appearance, Kyle’s callous father (Peter Krause) banishes him to Brooklyn with a sympathetic housekeeper (Lisa Gay Hamilton) and blind tutor (Neil Patrick Harris).
As Kyle ponders how to overcome the curse and get his old life back, he chances upon a drug addict in the act of killing a threatening dealer. Seizing the opportunity, Kyle promises the addict freedom and safety for his daughter, Linda Taylor (Vanessa Hudgens) if she will consent to live in Kyle’s Brooklyn home. Thus begins Kyle’s journey to discover true love in this hyper-modern retelling of the classic “Beauty and the Beast” story.

GABRIEL YARED's "AMELIA" [CD]
One of the most anticipated films of the fall, Fox Searchlight’s Amelia is already being touted as a major award contender.
Amelia stars two-time Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank as Amelia Earhart, the legendary aviatrix and enigmatic symbol of the American free spirit, who was guided by a profound curiosity for everything life had to offer. Earhart’s early aviation triumphs and meteoric rise to fame and fortune were propelled along by her tempestuous partnership and eventual marriage to publisher George Putnam (Richard Gere). Bound by mutual ambition, admiration and ultimately a great love, their bond could not be broken even with her brief passionate affair with Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor).Ms. Earhart was the first woman to solo the Atlantic and was the first pilot, man or woman, to fly unaccompanied across the Pacific. In Amelia’s attempt to be the first to fly around the world in an equatorial flight, her life was tragically cut short with her mysterious and untimely disappearance over the South Pacific in 1937.
The soaring score is by the Academy Award-winning composer Gabriel Yared (The English Patient).

HOWARD SHORE replaces John Corigliano on "THE EDGE OF DARKNESS"
Sadly, John Corigliano’s film outcome is - although brilliant, very limited as he’s primarily a concert / chamber / orchestral music composer who’s rarely dealt with our beloved medium. However, when the opportunity to score Martin Campbell’s new movie – The Edge of Darkness presented itself, the whole community was rejoiced. Rarely does one hear scores gifted with the graces of – say, The Red Violin (Corigliano’s famous Oscar-winning musical work for the same-titled movie) and the announcement of another film assignment for the composer after all these years brought excitement and anticipation in the entire community.
However, (and I quote from moviescoremagazine.com), John Corigliano’s score for the upcoming Mel Gibson thriller Edge of Darkness, directed by Martin Campbell, will be replaced by a new score by Howard Shore. The switch of composers was first indicated when the theatrical poster for the film appeared online this week, showing a credit block that makes no mention of Corigliano but lists Howard Shore under the “music by” tag. Warner Bros. has confirmed to MovieScore Magazine that
As homicide detective Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson) investigates the death of his activist daughter (Bojana Novakovic), he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence.

ELIA CMIRAL's "Forget me Not"
Film Composer Elia Cmiral Delivers Horrifying Score
For Psychological Thriller “Forget Me Not”
Premiering at Screamfest LA Film Festival Oct. 22 2009
(Los Angeles, CA)- Celebrated film composer, Elia Cmiral is scoring “Forget Me Not”, a mind-twisting horror movie, making a terrifying appearance at Screamfest Horror Film Festival 2009. Cmiral is well versed in the horror genre and has already won best musical score for the film “Splinter” at last year’s Screamfest. His new work, “Forget Me Not” focuses on a group of young and rowdy teenagers who have just graduated from high school; yet with celebration in the air, the vengeful spirit of a friend from their past decides to crash the party. Working with director Tyler Oliver, a musician himself, Cmiral brings emotion and feeling to this horrifying feature through his score, which tends to be much lighter than what is usually assumed for a horror film. Cmiral masterfully utilizes contemporary sounds, drum loops, guitar and bass into his works. The emotion of the movie shines through on the piano pieces which thematically reoccur throughout the film.
The teenage horror film does not take itself too seriously like many movies in this genre tend to do; instead it offers a highly entertaining and seriously scary experience with some unexpected twists. The original music has the typical horror flavors to get your heart racing yet also has a sweet, melancholic piano theme, and charming flashback cues which coolly contrast with distorted material for the atmospheric and chase scenes. With a young cast, a musical score that makes you shiver, and a plot that gets your heart racing, ‘Forget Me Not’ will leave every viewer looking over their shoulder as they exit the theater.
‘Forget Me Not’ is a new addition to the Screamfest Film Festival, the premier outlet for horror and sci-fi genres. This year Screamfest will be showcasing ‘Forget Me Not’ on October 22nd at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California. Screamfest began in 2001 by film producers Rachel Belofsky and Ross Martin in order to give horror and sci-fi filmmakers and writers a venue to have their work showcased within the industry. Many great films have come through this festival in the last 8 years, and ‘Forget Me Not’ is sure to be one of them.
No stranger to the world of horror and thriller movies, Elia Cmiral has scored films such as “Stigmata” and “Wrong Turn”. Born in Czechoslovakia, he attended the Prague Music Conservatory, where he studied composition and double bass. In 1989, he moved to America to attend USC's prestigious Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program, which led to him scoring his first American feature, “Apartment Zero”. Over the next decade, Cmiral continued building a reputation for himself, which lead to his scoring the successful “Nash Bridges” television series. In the last 10 years, Elia has written over two-dozen scores for independent films, TV and major studios.

ATLI ORVARSSON's "the fourth kind" released on [cd]
THE FOURTH KIND Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Music Composed by Atli Örvarsson
In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document … until now.
Structured unlike any film before it, THE FOURTH KIND is a provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where — mysteriously since the 1960s — a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered.
Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented.
Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, THE FOURTH KIND exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.
The thrilling and supernatural score is by Atli Örvarsson.
Universal Pictures will open THE FOURTH KIND nationwide on November 6.

GABRIEL YARED's new cd release, "AMELIA"
AMELIA Original Motion Picture Soundtrac Music Composed by Gabriel Yared
Hilary Swank
Richard Gere
One of the most anticipated films of the fall, Fox Searchlight’s Amelia is already being touted as a major award contender.
Amelia stars two-time Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank as Amelia Earhart, the legendary aviatrix and enigmatic symbol of the American free spirit, who was guided by a profound curiosity for everything life had to offer. Earhart’s early aviation triumphs and meteoric rise to fame and fortune were propelled along by her tempestuous partnership and eventual marriage to publisher George Putnam (Richard Gere). Bound by mutual ambition, admiration and ultimately a great love, their bond could not be broken even with her brief passionate affair with Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor).
Ms.
Fox Searchlight will begin rolling out AMELIA on October 23, expanding in the coming weeks.

Polanski’s ‘Ghost’ scored by Alexandre Desplat
R.P. Productions, the film company run by Roman Polanski, has confirmed to MovieScore Magazine that French composer Alexandre Desplat is doing the original score for Polanski’s new film, The Ghost. The film is currently in post-production, but it remains unclear if the film will be delayed or not as a result of the recent arrest of Polanski in Switzerland. According to various sources, Desplat is among the individuals who signed a petition organized by Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques to set the famous 76-year old director free (Polanski is imprisoned in Switzerland on a 31-year-old U.S. charge of child rape).

MTV interview with Shore on ‘The Hobbit’
MTV recently interviewed composer Howard Shore about his involvement in Guillermo del Toro’s and Peter Jackson’s Hobbit prequels to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Shore confirmed that he has indeed started composing – as was the case with Lord of the Rings, a lot of the musical elements is being sketched out even before there is any footage available. Right now, according to Shore, much of the focus is on the on-screen source music that needs to be created for the films. About scoring The Hobbit as a part of a larger piece of art and referncing music that has already been established in the trilogy, Shore said: “Certain things will have to be referenced really, possibly in a more simple way, a less complicated way. So that you feel that The Hobbit is a part of this [larger] story.”
