The Philharmonic Orchestra of Málaga has become the official symphony orchestra of the VI International Film Music Festival ‘City of Úbeda’ thanks to the agreement reached by both parties. Given the high quality standards the Andalusian orchestra is famous for, the BSOSpirit Society – organiser of the event along with the City Council of Úbeda- is very proud to announce this exclusive relationship.
The Philharmonic Orchestra of Málaga will shortly start preparing the memorable inventory of scores to be performed and enjoyed by film music enthusiasts on the occasion of this year’s Festiva,l running from 14 to 18 July. Thus, given the line-up of guests, the music ensemble will be performing no less than an Academy Award-winning score, ‘Up’, under the baton of composer Michael Giacchino. The orchestra will furthermore be performing the music from yet another genius, namely Alex North’s Spartacus (as part of the tribute the Festival is intending to pay to the Maestro). In addition, Dave Grusin’s The Goonies and Nathan Barr’s True Blood (in a specific concert devoted to the hit HBO TV show) will find its way into what promised to be a very exciting program.
History of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Málaga
The Philharmonic Orchestra of Málaga (OFM) gave its inaugural concert on 14 February 1991. It was named at the time as Malaga's City Orchestra, a consortium between the Town Hall of Malaga and the Council of Andalusia, which had the conviction that a city like Malaga had to have an outstanding symphony orchestra.
In these years, the orchestra has been committed to offering its home city audience the highest quality standards possible coupled with the best conductors and soloists of the national and international scene. Its program has featured the principal musical works of the international repertoire while simultaneously making other risky bets in a delicate balance between the well-known and acknowledged works versus the need for innovation. At the head of the orchestra and its project, four recognised conductors have stamped their own personality: Octav Calleya, Odón Alonso, Alexander Rahbari and Aldo Ceccato. Among the guest conductors we can find several celebrated composers, such as: Jesus Lopez Cobos, Sergiu Comissiona, Rafael Frühbeck of Burgos, Krzysztof Penderecki as well as prestigious soloists Alicia de Larrocha, Boris Belkin, Alfredo Kraus, Joaquín Achúcarro, Montserrat Caballé, Ainhoa Arteta, Carlos Álvarez, etc. Currently, the Artistic Director and Resident Conductor is Edmon Colomer.
The orchestra - named Philharmonic Orchestra of Malaga since its 10th anniversary - has always tried to push its boundaries beyond the season's standard program, for which reason it has also come up in parallel with a number of exciting proposals. In addition to numerous recordings of very diverse nature and with different conductors, the orchestra has been regularly taking part in the Old Music Festival as well as in the Contemporary Music Cycle: a series of concerts especially devoted to Contemporary Spanish music. Moreover, the orchestra has also offered a Chamber music Cycle, in parallel to its symphonic season program.
The orchestra is also involved in several educational programs in collaboration with the Education’s Department of the Malaga’s Town Hall.
The Philharmonic Orchestra of Malaga has been acclaimed in the most renowned theatres and festivals circuits of our country, as well as in several European tours that have taken it to Sweden, Greece, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany.
The Town Hall of Malaga awarded the orchestra with the ‘Malaga Prize’ for the best musical work of the year 2001 and the company M Cardinal presented the orchestra with the ‘Culture Prize’, in addition to receiving many other distinctions from several entities associated with culture at provincial and national level.
In 2007, the SGAE (the Spanish ASCAP) awarded the orchestra with a special prize, in recognition of its important contribution to the development of Spanish contemporary music.
